South Carolina Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Steps

Understanding the state milestones from beginner’s permit to full unrestricted driver’s license:

  1. Step 1: Beginner’s Permit (Minimum Age 15)
Must pass the SCDMV vision and written knowledge tests. Eligible students can take this written knowledge exam directly at our Rock Hill center at 3:00 PM following our Saturday classroom course. Must hold permit for a minimum of 180 days before road testing.
  2. Step 2: Complete Certified Driver’s Education
Drivers aged 15 and 16 must complete an approved course comprising 8 hours of classroom study and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. We provide this complete curriculum in our all-inclusive package.
  3. Step 3: Official SCDMV Road Test & Conditional License (Age 15) / Special Restricted (Age 16)
Once the 180-day holding period and 40 practice hours are logged, take your official road test on-site with our certified examiners—avoiding lines at the state DMV branch.
  4. Step 4: Regular Class D Driver’s License (Age 17+)
Drivers who hold a special restricted license for one full year with zero traffic violations or at-fault accidents advance to a full, unrestricted South Carolina driver’s license.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will we receive the 10% auto insurance discount certificate?

We issue your official certificate of completion immediately upon finishing your 6th behind-the-wheel driving instruction hour. Most major auto insurance carriers in South Carolina provide up to a 10% premium discount upon receiving this form.

Can my student take the official SCDMV road test before holding their permit for 180 days?

No. South Carolina state law strictly mandates that beginner’s permit holders under age 17 must hold their permit for at least 180 full days before taking the official skills road test. However, you can schedule and complete all 8 hours of classroom study and 6 hours of in-car instruction at any time during those 180 days.
